January 10: From Director, David Welch Hi 8th Grade Parents,
My name is David Welch and I’m back for my 2nd year as Director of the 8th grade Nativity play. Call me crazy… I met a few of you already and some of you from last year; however, let me do a quick synopsis of my background, goals, etc… · Wonderful wife of 22 years (Ann). Two kids (Zach , 20yrs, KU Student) and Emma (17 yrs, Miege Junior) · My undergraduate degree is in Speech & Theater. · I’ve worked in Sales for the past 15 years. Travel is my middle name; however, I’m able to take another 3 month temporary travel reprieve in order to do this play. · I’ve asked Cecile Schloegel to be my assistant only with rehearsals this year and I’m thankful that she is on board. Her solitary role is to help me on stage, notes, blocking, etc… basically, the Directors right arm. · Like last year, the goal for this play will NOT be about the roles that have been cast but; rather, about the entire process. I have never underestimated the 8th grade experience and your child’s involvement in this play process is crucial. We will be a family for three months. · You’ve heard it before and I’ll say it again. There is no small role. I cannot reiterate that enough. This will be one of the last times these students work together as a family and my intention is to make it powerful to them. Every rehearsal will begin with a prayer circle. This also gives your child an opportunity to receive and give positive “shout out’s” to their classmate · Sara Tumminia and Joane Wilkerson are my Producers of the show this year. My job, as the Director, is simply to put 61 kids on stage in a fluid motion and give each one purpose. Their job is everything surrounding that act. Keep that in mind…and it would be great if you could thank them every now and then because their job is continually unsung. · On a personal note: 8th grade kids are pretty special to me. I really like this age. It’s a time that’s critical to their development as they head into young adulthood and I sincerely enjoy being a part of their journey. · My door is open – say hi to me before or after rehearsals. I sincerely would love to meet you. Ultimately, it’s the parents working behind the scenes that get this show put together – and I’m thankful for you. |
